Profile

The University of Sudbury is a bilingual liberal arts university in the tradition of its founding Jesuit Fathers, and committed to promoting the traditions and culture of the First Nations.
Founded as Collège du Sacré-Coeur in 1913, it was the first, and for many years the only, institution of higher learning in Northern Ontario. In 1957, it changed its name and began to exercise its full teaching and degree-granting powers. It entered into the Laurentian federation as a founding member in 1960.
Located in Sudbury, approximately four hours north of Toronto, the university offers courses in philosophy, Indigenous studies, religious studies, folklore and journalism – all of which are accredited towards a Laurentian University undergraduate degree. In addition to regular services, the library’s holdings include a unique collection of rare books and archives that support many of those programs. Approximately half of the university’s students take correspondence or online courses. The university also offers face-to-face courses in some First Nations communities.
The Lucien Matte Residence of the University of Sudbury is a “home away from home” for a community of over 180 students. The residence features fully equipped kitchens where students can prepare their own meals if they do not wish to participate in Laurentian University Federation meal plans.
The Director of Spiritual Services organizes activities and fosters a stimulating environment for personal growth through community engagement in an ecumenical and inter-faith setting. Native elders also enhance the university experience of students by providing support services to students from an Aboriginal perspective. The university’s chapel is home to the St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish and also serves as a place for ecumenical and multi-faith worship and meditation.
Part-time jobs are available for students wishing to work during the school year at the library, in the administrative offices or in the residence.
The University of Sudbury offers an intimate learning environment with small classes and a vibrant residence community. The student can benefit from those attributes in the context of a large, full service, comprehensive university. The University of Sudbury also offers its students a substantial number of bursaries and scholarships.
Its faculty and lecturers care deeply about student learning. You can often find some of the thirty or so professors participating in on-campus activities as a way to reinforce the support from faculty members.
Its departments and Ethic Centre coordinate public conferences throughout the year on various topics of interest to all Canadians. Its faculty members lead various research projects for which student participation is often required.
